The Story Behind Your Story – 5 Tools to Begin to Tell the Tale

By guest blogger Jennie Nash. co-founder of the Author Accelerator, to the blog

My job as a book coach is to help writers get their book out of their head and onto the page, but it is never simply a matter of mechanics—the principles of narrative design and the rules of grammar.

We also do extensive work around a writer’s identity as a writer, their motivation for writing, their hopes for their book, why their future readers will care about what they are saying, and which elements of the work might have the most resonance.

Understanding these elements is often the key to a writer’s power—not only to actually finishing the book (and finishing strong), but to selling and marketing the work.

Surprisingly, most writing classes and workshops never discuss these elements—as if the words on the page are the beginning and the end of a writer’s impact.

Nothing, however, could be further than the truth.

I’ve spent the last 27 years in publishing, as an editor at both book and magazine publishers; an author of more than eight books; a writing instructor at the UCLA Writer’s Program; and a book coach whose clients regularly land top New York agents, big book deals, and indie publishing awards. I have seen firsthand how critical it is to know how to tell the story behind the story—the why of your work, the how of it, and the reasons readers might care.

In my webinar, I share five ways you can tell the story behind the story for maximum impact. We’ll discuss:

  • Why you need to know your deep level “why”—the reason you are writing.
  • How to use your “why” to develop the brand of YOU—it touches everything you write.
  • How to develop an Author Bio that amplifies your “why” and showcases your superpowers.
  • How to write great book jacket copy and show readers why they should care about your book.
  • How to identify the best stories behind your story—and how to tell them on blogs and in social media.

I hope you’ll join me for “The Story Behind Your Story – 5 Tools to Begin to Tell the Tale,” a free Bublish webinar. You can watch the replay via this link (registration is required).
