The family of God… a wonderful expression! But what does it mean? Is there really a place where you can be accepted and loved unconditionally? Can you really know that there is a place you belong… and that the place you belong is with God? Discovering that the reason that Jesus taught us to address God in our prayers as “our Father” is tremendous! It can transform our sense of identity and purpose in the great big adventure that we call life! In this collection of 35 devotional thoughts, author Thom Mollohan, a husband and father of four, shares the often amusing and poignant lessons learned at the hand of a patient and loving Heavenly Father in the course of just living life! Sweet, but powerful, encounters with God in the context of family life are gently illuminated by the faithful words of the Holy Scriptures and told in such a way that you will find yourself touched and challenged to draw close to God Who desires to draw near to you! (James 4:8) These devotional-style readings are perfect for anyone wanting to grow in intimacy with God!
I am amazed at how God teaches me through my children as He uses them to brings to my mind the truth He reveals in the Bible. And as I grow older, I find that some of the lessons aren't necessarily new, but somehow deeper and more profound. I am thankful that we have a God Who does indeed love us so much that He'll work in our lives to make Himself known.
Can’t be everywhere at once? God never said that you had to be.
Even when we don't what's wrong with us (or don't know that we have something wrong with us), God is at work to bring healing and health to us... maybe not physically (after all, this life is only temporary), but certainly spiritually! When through faith in Jesus Christ we are made children of God, He begins an often invisible work to cut away from us the unseen gangrenes of pride, selfishness, fear, and hate. Will we let Him do that work in us? Or do we resist His infinitely wise and loving hand?
Diane and I had "written" the names of our children in the sand at the beach to remind them of how special they are to us. Then, after several hours away, we returned to the same spot.
The most precious treasures of fatherhood for me have been those all-to-brief moments of simply connecting with my children. Fatherhood, it is said, is about providing, protecting and preparing our children for life in a rough and tumble world. That is true. But the most important ingredient, I have found, in making these particular responsibilities meaningful is the same one that best anchors our children to a rock-solid foundation of courage. What is that ingredient? It's love. And not just any kind of love either... it's the kind of love that quietly reaches into the life of another and lavishes upon it value and sacrifice. It's the kind of love that patiently invests in another hope for the future. It's the kind of love that finds its beginning and end (and all the in-between, too) in Christ Jesus.
The child of God's real home - her eternal home - is even now being prepared for her arrival! Difficulties, trials, and sorrows here in this life are merely momentary afflictions. One day she'll wake up and find herself in the perfect celestial city where God Himself dwells.
That was long enough now (and he was young enough then) that he doesn't remember this happening. But I still remember. And since then, there have been new songs he's sung... not so much literal songs (like his older brother), but testimonies and acts of loving and courageous service that change others around him and give glory to God!
Each of us, no matter who we are, has a unique voice with which we can praise God that no one else can use and a unique position with which we can serve God that no one else can fill. What are you doing with your voice? What are you doing with your position?
Yay me!
Even though they're a lot older now... they're still creating, inventing and imagining!
"Lostness" (the state of not being where one should be) characterizes the majority of those who are around us. In fact, many in the church are not in a genuine relationship with God through faith in His Son!
Is God's attitude towards us when we struggle with a selfish or sinful habit one that causes Him to turn in disgust from His child? No way! He hurries to cleanse His children again (and again) just as surely as Jesus washed the feet of His disciples!
It is amazing to me the lessons I learn at the hands (and words) of our children. God speaks so loudly through them sometimes that it seems like He's got a megaphone in my ear!
Our children are as human as we are, as tempted as we are to take shortcuts, and as fallen as we are in regard to sin and the need for Jesus as Savior. Parents who walk with the Lord and seek to live out His Word will be channels of blessings to their children. Sometimes the blessings are in the form of correction!
This episode invoked two questions for me as I reflected upon it. First, am I reserving my best for my Savior? Second, am I offering my heart to my Lord?
He still has those eyes. *sigh* And he's taught his younger brother and sister how to use theirs, too. Sometimes saying "No" is a very hard thing to do.
Instead of being paralyzed by worry over saying things "just right" to God, go to Him in confidence knowing that He wants you to come to Him as you are. As you trust Him with your weakness, confusion, and even your shortcomings, discover that He is at work in you to bring you to maturity. As you and I meditate in His Word, worship and serve Him with His people, and abide in a state of prayer to Him, He'll rewire our hearts and minds so that we grow out of our spiritual baby-hood.
If vacations can teach us anything, it's that flexibility is necessary for happiness. More than that! It's necessary for survival! What valuable life lessons have you learned while supposedly on vacation?
If Jesus' earthly life and ministry clearly demonstrate anything for us, it is that God Himself is passionately and urgently reaching out to rescue those of us who are "drowning in sin". "The Son of Man (Jesus) came to seek and to save the lost." - Luke 19:10
Daily expressions of kindness and encouragement may often seem to be no more than writing on the "sands" of memory only to be washed away by the wind and waves of time and circumstance. But as such words and/or gestures accrue over time, they etch into our souls permanent niches of strength of character as well as unearthing for us the rich veins of the precious ores of courage, peace, and joy. Even so, our Father in heaven has Himself engraved our names forever upon His own heart and the passing of time and the crashing torrents of circumstance can never remove them. What greater joy is there than that?
What we have with our Heavenly Father through Jesus Christ is much, much more than a religion... it's a awesome relationship!
The joys of returning home from my earthly trips have often been wonderful 'pointers' to the more complete joy I'll one day experience when I arrive at my heavenly home!
“… He Who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” - Philippians 1:6 ESV
For our hearts and lives to become "clean" in God's presence, we need the cleansing of Christ's blood in our lives!
Instead of running FROM God, why not run TO God? After all, there is a play you belong and that place is in the presence of the Heavenly Father!
Prepare to journey again to lands and times you once knew as a child, and revisit your favorite fairy tales. It turns out that there may be more to those stories than meets the eye. Be prepared for the voice of God to speak into your heart and life unexpected words of love, conviction and encouragement. Inside this book are pearls waiting to be unearthed by seekers of truth. Do you dare open your heart to the Giver of truth? Do you dare not to?
Stories are powerful conduits through which ideas can flow. Think of any story that you especially love and you know that entertainment is not the most important factor in its ongoing resonance with your spirit. Stories can transport us to lofty summits that allow us a eagle's view of our world and a big picture mindset on which the glow of hope can shine like the sun above the clouds of discouragement, fear, and weariness. Stories can teach us truth and they can ignite action as our souls are stirred within us. And sometimes, the old stories teach best.
Our Heavenly Father has prepared a banquet of fellowship... made especially with you in mind! There are times when the path on which He leads us may make us afraid and the invitation to us may seem strange and even alarm us... yet He has your best interests at heart! After all, you are His precious child through faith in Jesus Christ!
The faithful stitching of right choices and loving actions, that result from faith in God's grace, can bind even the greatest giants of fear and defeat we may face in life.
The journey we are given sometimes leads us to things that frighten us. But if we trust in the One Who leads us, trust Him enough to follow and obey Him, we find that we really have nothing to fear.
Rose Red (who ultimately becomes Snow White in this retelling of the timeless fairy tale), is nearly overcome with the weight of her guilt, sorrow, and despair. Is there any hope for her in this crisis of faith?
A man or woman whose life is of true consequence in the eyes of God is often the very one the world never notices. That is, until his or her courage and character change the course of history!
How do the stories you tell your children - or even tell yourself - glorify God? In what ways do they encourage (or discourage) one's walk with the Lord?
Whatever the experience in family brokenness one may have had in life (rejection, abuse, abandonment), he or she is offered the chance of being made a true child through faith in Jesus... a child who is welcomed, cherished, and given the full rank of son or daughter of God!
Satan would love nothing more than to shut down your trusting obedience to God. That's why he'll spend enormous amounts of energy reminding you of how inconvenient and costly it is to obey the Lord. The devil will tell you how much it costs to obey God, but he won't tell you how much it costs to not obey Him.
There are times in our lives when we've left the path of what we know is right and we are haunted by the question of "What have I done?" That question is almost always followed by the dreadful thought that there is no going back. Not so for the child of God. Grace is granted to us through faith in His Son. In Him, we not only can we get back on our feet, we can also resume a special path in fellowship with Him.
Be careful to not let anything carry you away from the path you know you ought to walk!
Selfishness is ugliness. It stains our words and actions with garish unloveliness and reeks with the foul stench of pride. The most lovely people in the world are those who have most learned to love others, putting the needs of those around them above themselves.
Of course, whenever cookies come calling, I am also tempted to pig out... so I can understand the power of this pig's temptation.
Whatever the reason we fail to follow our Heavenly Father's plan for living, we're in serious danger of being caught by wolves of disaster when hard times come!
We're to easily satisfied with the "good things" of this world... to the point that we miss out on the "best things" of God! The blessings reserved for a child of God might happen to include material benefits, but are mostly those things that prepare us for an eternity with Him! Therefore, don't be easily lured away from a life of abiding in Christ - even when it seems hard to do or you must make sacrifices to do it: there is stored up for you a greater glory and better treasure in the pleasure of God over your trusting obedience than can be found in any treasury, any hall-of-fame, and any place of enjoyment and pleasure in this world or life-time. Don't settle for anything less than God's best. Jesus endured hardship, rejection, affliction and even the cross to secure the best of all possible outcomes... the defeat of sin and eternal salvation for all those who place their faith in Him. He didn't settle. Neither should we.
"Remain in Me," Christ urges us. But what does it mean? We struggle to understand the practical application of such a spiritual admonition... and some will say that it isn't meant to be taken seriously in our busy world and that it can't be done anyway. But Jesus' invitation is a serious call to know Him personally and profoundly in practical experience in the context of life's demands... certainly as much for today as it ever has been. Shortcuts and rationalizations only cheat us of the joy of experiencing His grace in everyday moments.
There are times that a genuine response of faith to God seems ridiculous to those around us who are watching. But that is faith in its most supreme form. When God's Spirit speaks to us from His Word, it makes demands of us that others reject and over which even our own reason balks. When we choose to trust God's Word, however, over what others say and over what our own inclinations would suggest, we've demonstrated a faith in God that positions us to experience Him in power and love.
When Christ Himself abides in us - as we learn to abide in Him through faith - the limitless power of God infuses our lives with the infinite potential of God Himself. What a shame when we forfeit that grace with the impoverished gleanings of the little we can do and even dream on our own!
Jesus, when He endured death on the cross, did so in our place for our breaking of God's law. He took upon Himself the weight of death so that we could be made forgiven, free, and whole. He did so in order that we could be made alive forever with Him in heaven. "When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: 'Death is swallowed in victory.' 'O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?' The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, Who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ." - 1 Corinthians 15:54-57 ESV
Our Maker's pronouncement on your existence? It's GOOD! You have a divine worth given to you because you were made in God's image. Not only that, but you are also incredibly valuable to God in that His own Son's life was spent to redeem you. How can you run away from that?
It is often proved true that trials and tribulations with which we are afflicted are the very things that best prepare us for Satan's assault against us and best equip us for a life that is fruitful. What trials and tribulations are you enduring right now that could be blessings in disguise?
There is a path also appointed for you. Are you ready to dare the adventure of discovering what it truly means to be a "child of God"?
Giants (giant problems, giant fears, giant heartaches) have a way of storming into our lives and, if unchecked, lay to waste hopes and dreams for joy and peace. What do you do when giants come into your life?
In the nail-biting, edge-of-your-seat styles of Ted Dekker and Frank Peretti! Could there be more than meets the eye in the handsome and charming Gage who has won over Heather's friend, Jillian? Sixteen-year-old Heather is a girl who just wants to fit in and have fun. But one night of breaking the rules sets into motion a terrifying series of events that launches her into a mystery that has at its heart an ancient evil. Pulled into a world of darkness and fear that will nearly destroy her, her family, and her faith, can light yet overcome the darkness? What people are saying about Crimson Harvest: "Wow... Expertly written." "Crimson Harvest is a fascinating work...." "The plot is well thought out and riveting dialogue sets the scene...." "This is a powerful read."
Doing the right thing is frequently not an easy thing to do, especially when "popular opinion" is critical of us or conventional wisdom tries to warn us off. Still, in an age where our world wants us to fall in line with "political correctness", let there be some who courageously say, "We have to do what's in our power to help." - no matter the cost.
Sometimes the conversations we need most to have are the ones we have the hardest time having.
We are always in jeopardy of starting a slide down a slippery slope whenever we find ourselves accommodating compromise of our convictions. What's worse is the fact that a small and, assumedly, insignificant decision can actually prove to be tremendously significant. Every choice we make has the potential of being a watershed moment in life. Let us take great care then to make the best choices we can every time.
Denial. We've all heard the word. We probably even know what it is in principle. But do we recognize it when a loved one or friend is using it? Facing the possibility of someone being in danger yet failing to recognize it (or maybe hiding it) is tough. It takes courage to lovingly investigate, asking questions that put you at risk of offending someone important to you. But love isn't about our comfort. It isn't about what's easy. It's about what's right and what's best for those we say we love.
When working through this encounter, I was struck by the fact that when we are confronted with something more terrible than anything we have imagined, we will often choose to believe a lie... even when we know deep down in our hearts that it is a lie just because we want it to be true.
The most dangerous enemies are those who pose as friends. Sometimes, because we don't comprehend the reality (and proximity) of evil, we go too far and lay ourselves bare to those things that just might devour us.
Heather is caught in the disconcerting position of wanting to believe something, but knowing that it isn't true. She wants to believe that her friend is all right... that her friend's brother is all right... and that the horror that unfolded in front of her was only a dream. The immediate circumstances all point to a bad dream... or at least an overactive imagination. But Heather knows, too, that just wishing something didn't happen doesn't change the past and pretending that things are all right doesn't fix anything.
When evil wreaks its havoc and suffering and fear are born, one might hope that those who do such evil will soon be brought to light and justice will be satisfied. But when those who do such evil seem to fade into the shadows without having to answer for their crimes, one must wonder if it is the result of something else besides coincidence or a faulty legal system. Sometimes there is a will behind the scenes that draws together threads of purpose and weaves them into a tapestry of pain and loss and of fear and intimidation for those that evil would control and consume. On the other hand, there is yet even a greater will at work with unconquerable power and love that exerts a sovereign plan that evil cannot overcome. *Romans 8:28
In Kevin's reluctant visit to his sister's church, he is riddled with hostility. It isn't, of course, hostility on the part of those who are there, but that of his own. He doesn't want to be there and, with secret resentment seething within him, counts the moments until he can escape. Kevin is very much the kind of guy that only makes an appearance at church on those necessary occasions... you know, weddings, funerals, visits with determined and well-intentioned family members who are anxious about the eternal destiny of a loved one. If you're one of those who are somehow "forced" to go to church, maybe what you really afraid of is finding out that God isn't the bully you've made Him out to be, but is instead the eternal Father Who sent His Son to save you. And if you're one of those who doggedly invite others to church, hold on and trust God with the seed that He'll sow through you.
When selfish and unwise decisions finally result in the unthinkable, fear moves in and takes over. And the more our minds focus on our fears, the greater the power our fear has over us. How then does one conquer his or her fear? By focusing on the One over Whom fear has no power. When we rest in Jesus, we find rest from our fear.
Jillian's disdain and Heather's horror clash in this confrontation at Jillian's house. The attitude of each girl's parents stand in sharp contrast with one another as the way they relate to their daughters... and life itself from their particular worldviews.
As children ascend their way to adulthood, it's only too true that at some point they may make mistakes... some that are serious but soon overcome and some with consequences that may be agonizing or terrifying. How much better is it for all involved if parents, who wisely know to establish and enforce boundaries, work just as hard at maintaining relationships founded on trust with their children so that when worlds are turned upside down, their sons and daughters know that there really is someone on their side.
In this point in her terrifying experience, Heather is overwhelmed with the reality of the fragility of life. And while it is not clear to her here yet, it does occur to her that the terrible violence against her parents is somehow tied to the mistake she had made only a short while before. Our mistakes are sometimes like that. Sometimes we play into the hand of someone who wears the mask of friendship, but then betrays our trust. And sometimes our mistakes have consequences that not only affect us, but also the ones we love most.
To one who has had plenty of examples of untrustworthy people, faith (as in placing one's trust in another) seems unreasonable, risky, and potentially suicidal. To place one's faith in Someone Who can't be seen with physical eyes, the difficulty can be exponentially greater! Still, that's what God requires of us... to trust Him. As we do so, as we learn His heart and mind from the testimony of His Word, we ultimately find that there is no "trustworthiness" like His. That's why Jesus name is "Faithful and True" (Revelation 19:11).
Caught up in something monstrous, Heather is tempted to forgo the truth because she knows others may be quick to decide she is lying to protect herself or is wildly delusional. But she takes a courageous stand. She decides to tell the truth no matter what others think.
Nothing demonstrates love so much as the sacrifices that love makes for another. A mother or father's suffering for a child is an echo of the kind of love that Jesus' death on the cross demonstrates. Heather's mother and father will both bear the marks of their love for their child... just as Jesus' own flesh bears the marks of His love for us.
Sometimes closure isn't really closure. When someone is in a hurry to "move on", questions can still remain.
Where do you turn when those places you thought were safe turn out to not be? Where does your hope rest when you fear comes to call? Whatever you've trusted in, whoever you've believed in, the One Who made you and through Jesus redeems you, is the One to Whom you can always turn. After all, He holds your "forever" in His hand. "Wondrously show Your steadfast love, O Savior of those who seek refuge from their adversaries at your right hand. Keep me as the apple of Your eye; hide me in the shadow of Your wings, from the wicked who do me violence, my deadly enemies who surround me." - Psalm 17:7-9 ESV
Trust, once broken, is very hard to build back. But it isn't impossible. With courage to face the truth and loving and encouraging accountability, trust can... over time... be regained.
Where do you turn when crisis strikes?
Kevin is oblivious to the irony of his situation: he is here a physically bound and in darkness, cold and alone. Spiritually speaking, that' exactly his predicament, too! In the physical world, another person just as spiritually bound is instrumental in physically freeing him. In the spiritual realm, only the Son of God, Jesus, can set him free!
Evil is ever thirsty for life because it squanders life. While this story is obviously fiction, the principle is real. When evil controls us, it compels us to try to take from others when we've wasted for ourselves.
Addiction snares its victim and ushers him into a world of darkness. It lays waste hopes and dreams and ruins relationships. In face, so deep and enduring can the shadows seem that hope may wither to nothing... but grace can pierce the deepest night.
There is more than one way one can wake up!
I intended that this scene convey the picture of our need to depend on God's help. We all have limitations... no matter how gifted or equipped we may be.
Kevin has no idea where to start searching for his missing niece, but time isn't his friend and he's got to begin somewhere. He and Detective Sharptwig agree that the best place to begin just might be the club where the mysterious events began.
No one likes to feel out of control, especially when he knows that others are counting on him.
Any parent's worst nightmare is to find that one's beloved child is suddenly and inexplicably missing. When we find ourselves dragged into such nightmares, the only One to Whom we can really go - the only One Who really understands - is God. Whatever paths lie before our feet, He is faithful to His children to go with them through even the darkest of valleys.
Often it takes a great crisis for us to see what matters most and it sometimes takes a great sacrifice to teach us what love looks like.
Evil, or at least its root, never just magically goes away. It must be uprooted and removed before whole spiritual healing can begin. Those things we witness in our lives and in our culture that are wrong, misguided, or wicked don't just magically get better either. For what isn't right to be made right, someone must do something about it.
The wonder and glory of a life newly established in Christ can seem so sweet and so amazing that we cannot imagine "going back" to what we once were. But although we may have changed, our world hasn't and old expectations and pressures from our old friends, as well as old impulses from old habits, may threaten the fruitfulness God's promises in His Word . Still, once we begin to realize the power to remain rooted in the new life of Christ is given to us by His indwelling Holy Spirit, we can resolutely stand... even when we must stand alone.
When evil's wheedling fails to woo and its promises don't lure victims in, it resorts to bullying and threats. Having read and heard the stories of young people coerced into unthinkable things through human trafficking, I've noted that one common factor that compels those who don't want to go - or want to stay - are the threats made against victims' loved ones. Sometimes victims are victimized through even their desire to protect and save mothers, fathers, brothers, and sisters.
The argument between Jillian and her mother in this particular scene played out in a way that echoed some interactions that sadly I've witnessed between a parent and child on a few occasions. Never pleasant, it's sometimes the harbinger of heartaches yet to come.
Often, when we are confronted with our own deepest motivations or desires, we cringe at what we see. We may even run away from it. There are even times we may attack the truth in order to validate ourselves and justify the choices we've made. But the only way to reap the power and freedom of truth is to embrace it. If we will, then in the power of God, we can release our brokenness and internal poverty to the One Who died for us in order to bring to us healing and an eternal kind of prosperity.
People who don't see the "real fun" of Christianity are sometimes the victims of mixed signals from Church-goers. The doing of "churchy things" on the one hand and the seeking of ungodly thrills on the other can inadvertently send the message that Jesus isn't all He's cracked up to be and that a greater level of excitement can be found outside of His word and will. Until people can see that what motivates a Christian isn't merely a ritual or tradition, they will not see the real value - the "real fun" - of a Christian lifestyle. The "real fun" of Christianity is found in the joy of personally experiencing a loving God Who delights in His child and the adventure we undertake in growing in our relationship with Him.
When the light has failed, we are in danger when we take for granted our safety. There are some things that count on it to cover themselves as they seek their prey. Spiritual darkness, the lack of God's light because we do not allow it to shine in and through us, is the same way. Confusion, uncertainty, and fear are tall shadows that some use to capture the unwary. The only way to effectively confront those who hide in the shadows is to bring in the light. "God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with Him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin." - 1 John 1:5b-7 ESV
We are constantly making choices all day, every day. What we choose (even in the "small things") reveals the orientation of our hearts. Are we living lives that sow to eternity the fruits that we want for eternity? Or are we sowing such things that will leave us in eternity with only a harvest of regret and sorrow? "Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap." - Galatians 6:7 ESV
Much of what feels safe to us in this life is an illusion. An unexpected attack, a freak accident, or a tragic diagnosis can turn the our world upside down in a heartbeat. Does this mean that there is no safe place? No. There is one place that is safe. It's found in God Himself. "He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the LORD, 'My refuge and my fortress, my God, in Whom I trust." - Psalm 91:1-2 ESV
Not all offers of help can be trusted. Some things that are "too good to be true"... are. Beware shortcuts for personal responsibility and watch out for promises of power and pleasure without consequence. Sooner or later, there is a price to pay.
Is fear holding you back from the hope and healing you could find in Christ?
Fearful circumstances have a way of clouding our thinking, oppressing our hearts, and paralyzing our will... no matter our good intentions. How good to know that our heavenly Father, although not always obviously present, IS always present. More than that, He is involved with us no matter how dark the world may seem to us and will faithfully walk with us through whatever "valley of the shadow of death" we may find ourselves in. Best of all, He is in control and is working all things for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purposes (Romans 8:28)!
