Kevin O’Neil shoved hard at the brake pedal, lurching forward as his Ford Taurus slid to a sudden stop. Lost deep in thought, he had nearly overlooked the stop sign at the intersection. It was a good thing he had come to his senses, too. A patrol car was sitting in the empty parking lot of a closed pharmacy just to his left.
He looked carefully both ways, more to impress the watching policeman than to see that the way was clear. He then pulled carefully through the intersection and went on his way, his mind already moving on to other matters. As he drove off, he did not notice that the police cruiser had quietly pulled out of its parked spot onto the street behind him and was now following him into the darkness of the night.
