Looking down, he read the title:

Parker opened the stained, leather cover and turned to the first page. The paper crackled. Parker could not guess how long it had been since the pages had been disturbed. He carefully smoothed the paper and lifted the lantern to get a better look at the faded writing.
Today was my first day of sixth grade. It was terrible
. . . as terrible as last year. No one talked to me. No one sat by me. I spent lunch all alone sitting at a table in the corner. At least no one said anything mean to me.
