Once “our secret” was out, my fear escalated. I lived in constant terror of being killed because “the code of silence” had been broken … as if I were in the Mafia. It was instilled at a very young age: “Don’t tell.” Paranoia set in. When a man pulled up next to me at a stoplight, I believed he would raise a gun and shoot me. I had images of crashing my car or driving off a bridge. Either I was going to be killed or kill myself. BUT … I … TOLD!
