A collection of Author JZ Murdock's fiction with elements of Horror, Humor and Sci Fi. Includes in the final story, the novella, "Andrew", which is a precursor of the following book, Death of Heaven. From Twilight Zone to the absurd, it's quite a ride.
The novella "Andrew" has been through a lot. It sets the tone for my epic Horror book, Death of Heaven. It's possible it may be more fun to read DoH first however, then read Andrew for the backstory. When this story was first written for my University Fiction Writing 101 class, it left the class in stunned silence. I talk more about this at the end of the book under About the Stories. The scene in the TV room, one girl had said, scared the hell out of her as she read it alone, sitting on her bed the night before as it was totally not something she expected. In going the other direction from what she expected, and all our classmates agreed with her, it was extremely affective. I had been concerned that I was crossing the line, so I did my best to tone things down. But in toning it down, it would seem that I actually enhanced the effect. No one should have to have to go through what Andrew did, and I take you there along with him.
This story was my first ever zombie tale. Since I had gotten "Gumdrop City" (a serial killer story) into the "Undead Nation Anthology" (which was mostly zombie tales) I felt I needed to write one. I based this story on the tale of Abraham and God's test of him with his son, Isaac. I started writing on that premise with no thought about where the tale would go and what is in the book is simply where it ended up. It was like reading a story as it was being written and I had a lot of fun writing it. My second zombie story, "Mr. Pakool's Spice", has been submitted to ZombieFiend.com's new anthology and so far it looks good for getting into that book.
Sarah, was a story that started with a girl at my University telling me about her Grandmother. We had left our Abnormal Psych class and were talking between classes. The stories she told me of what Alzheimer's was like for her beloved Grandmother were affecting and sad. I felt I had to share that with people to give them some idea of what this disease was like to experience and for the family to live with. But knowing me, I couldn't let it go with merely relating the stories I had been told. I had to take it beyond the realm of Human experience. Some True Tales, some Twilight Zone, some Horror movie, Sarah twists and turns till you're not quite sure where you are.
Gumdrop City is based upon the true story of a child serial killer that I learned of in an Abnormal Psych class at University while getting my Psych Degree. I have fleshed it out with a Hollywood producer toward being a full screenplay. It is also in 2010s "Undead Nation Anthology", proceeds going to Cancer Research. Sampson, his affectations, his home decorations and the father in the story are all made up, but his activities being discovered in his house and his trophies are all true. However, the ending in reality is quite the opposite to what happens in the story.
This is the opening to this story. It is a lighter piece of all the stories in this book. It has a kind of light horror about it but mostly it is entertaining and fun. I know I hate it myself when waking up to find the one you love pointing a large caliber weapon at you in a panic. Not that I've ever had that experience. Not yet anyway.
Revised 2014! Is the end of the world coming? Let's first examine where we've been and learn nothing we know to be true has anything to do with what really happened, who we are, or where we came from. Horrifically discovered by two friends who have already been through far too much in their lives.
