Workplace Love on an Island of Zombies
I chose this scene because I feel like I got the point across of the description of setting I wanted to achieve. It also serves as a brief pause in the rising suspense that has been building in the narrative up to this point. For those who buy the book, they will see how this brief respite is nicely tied into and flows right back into the actions taking place on the island that the main characters have been oblivious to, up to this point.

I figured that an island full of cybernetic zombie servants would need some sort of food source. They cant very well dine on human sacrifices of the scientists or wealthy vacationers, so the next logical step was having easy access to livestock. Since the zombies do all the other work on the island, why not the farm too?

An example of how everyone, especially the characters in my books, are hiding deep, disturbing agendas. Including finding a way to breed zombies!
Zombie's be damned, there's always time for naked
I wanted to set up early on that there would be a physical, if not necessarily romantic, relationship between Marija and Jeremy. I like this relationship dynamic because it sets up future character development for both characters and though it's a common bond, develops into revealing very different personality traits for each character.
Zombies and Chicken Wings
I knew from the beginning that this was going to be a horror/scifi story with a heavy dose of campiness and dark humor. As much as it's a work of fantasy, it's also a mirror held up to the real world and our modern culture. When people look in that mirror I want them to see the beauty and humor, but also the defects and inexcusable horrors that we shouldn't turn away from. I wanted to make people uncomfortable with some of the topics that are looked on in this story. I think this scene accomplishes that.
Dr. Morose Concept
This excerpt basically explains the entire concept of the novel and how the characters find themselves on an island inhabited by zombies who have been cybernetically enslaved.
Zombie waiters
I wanted to make this scene as eerie and surreal as possible. The idea of shambling corpses serving food seems as off putting to the central characters as it is natural to the scientists and residents of the island. Setting up early that the folks already living on the island might have a slightly off-kilter concept of normal.
Wait, what?
I chose this as the opening for my first zombie novel because I wanted to have "the body on the first page", but I didn't want it to be any ordinary body. I wanted to evoke the feeling right from the get go that although the story takes place in a tropical paradise, something is not quite right.
