Ella sat alone watching the dark ominous clouds building on the horizon. The droplets of water from the pending storm began to accumulate on the window of the coffee shop. She knew she should be heading home ahead of the inclement weather, but she just hated going there these days.
Watching the clouds swirl in dark gray patterns mesmerized Ella. She had always been intrigued by storms, and the hypnotic fascination was a quiet diversion for her tonight. She sipped her coffee and played the morning’s argument with her husband Tony over and over in her mind. Ella had wanted to know who Tony’s new friend was who showed up at the house several times recently. She had come home and the men’s conversation ended abruptly. It was only one argument of many lately. They could barely speak now without a fight. Tony had retired a few months ago and had become distant and extremely evasive with her since then.
Tony had his friends. Ella was not allowed to, nor was she permitted to make any plans outside of her responsibilities with work. Tony became secretive, password protecting everything, and barely even making eye contact with her. Ella wondered if he was having an affair or why he didn’t just leave her if he was unhappy. One thing she did know for sure; it was painful being home when Tony was there. How did they get to this point? How did they get out? What was the end game?
