Maggie rushed through the grocery store grabbing food and beverages from her list in preparation for the weekend’s upcoming boat trip. Of course, the market was busy prior to the holiday, so there was no point in attempting to hurry. She had had to work later than she intended today and needed to get home to load the boat with the staples before sunset, since there were no lights on the dock. She knew Matt would be antsy about their sun up departure time the next morning. With the trunk loaded with food, Maggie sprinted home to finish her tasks.
During the summer months boaters and sports enthusiasts from all over flock to Olcott Beach, a small sleepy marina hamlet nestled just north of Buffalo on the south shore of Lake Ontario. Summer in the Great Lakes region of Western New York, though short-lived, is one of the most beautiful times for the region. Maggie and Matt Kay loved living in the remote rural area on the lake; it was their little paradise.
Matt met Maggie’s car with a grin and an empty cooler. “Fill’er up,” he snickered. He proudly produced his completed ‘honey-do’ list. “Jack did his chores too!” Matt grinned. Jack, their energetic Dalmatian, made every trip under foot in assistance. Short of the groceries, the boat was packed and ready to go. Together they made quick work loading the food. Breathless from several trips up and down the dock steps, they sat to tally up any remaining loose ends. Matt grabbed three red solo cups, no glass on the boat, and poured him and Maggie a glass of wine, his way of christening the boat and their trip. Of course, Jack got water. The three drank to the beginning of their holiday and week long trek across the lake and through Canada. They planned to sail across to Toronto and work their way around the north Ontario shoreline to Colburg. Lake Ontario can be relentless in harsh weather, producing mountainous waves and dangerously rough waters. As seasoned boaters they had planned carefully, consulting weather forecasts and nautical charts. It should be a week of beautiful weather and water conditions, good friends and fun times.
