“We are Haida.” Yaahl indicates his wife and child. “We were in Sitka when the Horde swept through the coastal towns and villages in Alaska.”
“You fought?” Kalapati asks softly.
He shakes his head. “Some did, Colonel Blackhand.” The man looks into Kalapati’s eyes then settles on Alaya.
“Those who did were sorry,” Yaahl adds.
Tangaroa clarifies, “The Vashon have reports. Anchorage was leveled. They resisted.”
The mayor flinches at this news. “When will we learn from our histories?”
But Kalapati remains stoic.
With a resigned nod, Yaahl continues. “After we saw what happened to those who fought, we surrendered. Nearly our entire town.”
