Synopsis
When a new trooper starts working at the Southwest Library, she meets Alaya, the Librarian's daughter. But for Henrietta, a soldier with a secret, this young woman may hold the key to expelling the invaders. The events that follow launch Henrietta on a journey that is dangerous and epic, leading her into the councils of the invaders and chieftains of the tribes that rule the desert land of the Southwest. But an even greater danger is coming. Something is moving into the land, something more evil even than the dominating ruling clans. Messengers warn of a mounted menace moving down from the north, destroying all in its path. Facing the rising threat, Henrietta must join with the librarians and old enemies to build a stronger alliance. In this tale of the future world without modern technology, each character must make decisions of loyalty and commitment that will shape the future.

Published author of academic articles and book chapters and post-apocalyptic "woodpunk" fiction, S.A. Gibson turns his passions for learning, artificial intelligence, and human communication into accessible worlds of wonder and fascination. He is most proud of having been active in political actions for peace and justice. He lives with his beautiful wife and their beloved Dachshund-Chihuahua in Southern California, where he is currently producing an academic title on international ethnic conflict.

Blackhand leads an armed force that prepares to challenge the Horde that is moving closer each day. Not only must she get her troops ready. She also must fend off her leaders who don't trust her.

In the Horde's Way

“I don't like your approach to warfare, Colonel.”
This is not what Blackhand thought this meeting would be. “Sir, doesn't the strategic planner have some important news for us?”
“Well...” Xuna resists, changing the topic. “Supposedly, reports from Alaska. The Horde are on the move.” Kalapati sees him struggling with the direction he wants to go. His face relaxes as he returns to the attack. “That's why it’s important to have this talk. You don't stand up and fight the enemy the way you should.”
“Our number one concern is victory, no?” Better not remind him I was never defeated by his troops.
“The sub-commander has requested I demote you.” This isn’t going well. Probably wouldn’t have his underling in person to do that. “The only reason I’m not going to is because Sub-Commander Killgeese leaves this week.
“Yes, sir.”
“It’s not a pass, Colonel. I’m not giving you that.”
