“You’re saying that Wyatt Smith wants me to watch over him?” I narrowed my eyes, positive my boss had lost his mind.
Darcy dropped his gaze to the papers on his desk. “Well… he didn’t specifically ask for you.”
I snorted. “That’s what I thought.”
“But he needs to stay with someone he can trust.”
“Cut the bullshit, boss. Tork is forcing him to seek protection, isn’t he?”
Darcy’s lips twitched. “Obviously.”
I frowned. “So why me?” To say Wyatt and I didn’t get along would be an understatement. He seemed to loath the very sight of me, and I found Wyatt to be an arrogant, know-it-all prick of an alpha.
“Tork heard some chatter that someone might be coming for Wyatt. He pissed off a guy who is supposedly in the Russian mafia a week ago, and until he can figure out if this threat is serious or not, Tork thought Wyatt should drop out of sight for a while. He figures no one will look for him at your place.”
“Uh, yeah. Because only an idiot would put the two of us in the same room together.”
He frowned. “You both need to grow up. You think I haven’t had to work with people I hated? That’s life, boys.”
I shifted restlessly. “Why not just arrest whoever this is threatening Wyatt?”
He sat back in his chair and linked his fingers over his flat stomach. “If that was easy, don’t you think we would have done that by now?”
“Wyatt probably started this rumor just to make himself seem more important.”
Darcy gave a weary sigh. “Could you please stop second-guessing everything and just do your job?”
I scowled. “My job is protecting people who deserve it.”
“That isn’t your call. You don’t get to decide who’s worthy and who isn’t.” He gave me a stern look. “This will be a more informal arrangement than usual. Wyatt will stay with you, and you’ll need to keep your ears and eyes open until we can decide if the threat is for sure.”
“Why can’t we just wait and see if anyone comes after Wyatt?” If this whole thing was bogus, I sure didn’t want to have him crashing at my place.
“Better safe than sorry.”
I groaned and stared at the ceiling. “Why the hell would Wyatt pick Shield to protect his ass? There are other agencies, for fuck’s sake. Why doesn’t he just use one of the guys from Fist? He works for them, he should be able to trust them.”
“There are reasons.”
I narrowed my gaze at his mysterious tone. “Like what?”
“Don’t worry about it.”
I chuffed. “Hey, maybe you could get away with saying that to me, if I wasn’t the one who was going to be babysitting Wyatt’s obnoxious ass.”
“He’s not that bad.”
“Yeah he is.”
My boss’s lips twitched. “He’ll be at your place in an hour.”
“What?” Irritation flushed through me. “Why the hell so soon?”
“Would you rather we wait until someone takes him out?”
I smirked. “Maybe. At least I wouldn’t have to put up with him anymore.”
