I have a critical voice inside my head that talks incessantly. No, I am not psychotic, to the best of my knowledge. It’s a voice that constantly shames me or “shoulds” on me.
“You should not have said that.” “You should have done that.” “You should already know how to do that.” “You should be finished already.” If I had to draw a picture of what’s going on in my head, I would draw a little man riding atop a big old 1970s station wagon, carrying a bullhorn, and screaming these mean things. Would I say things like this to you? No! Would I keep people in my life who spoke to me this way? Absolutely not. Someone said S.H.A.M.E. is an acronym: Should Have Already Mastered Everything.
