During that time, with my neighborhood friends, I attended a retreat in Wisconsin for the women of the church called SoulFeast. We learned about spiritual practices. (I honestly had never heard that term before.) I attended the session on the practice of solitude. The teaching was powerful, and I was so impacted by it that I scheduled solitude on my calendar from that point forward, once a month from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., while my children were in school. I would read, journal, walk, pray, and nap. I believe those hours in solitude and all the other experiences during our time in Chicago were a time of preparation for my future.
At the end of the solitude teaching session at that retreat, the Lord’s Supper was offered. Sitting next to me was the person who was leaving the staff position for which Jay was being considered. She washed my hands and served me the Communion elements. It felt as if she was passing the torch to us.
