He said, “Well, I am biased, but I think Renovaré is one of the best things out there . . . ”
I’d never heard of it. He told me to read some of Richard Foster and Dallas Willard’s books to see if I connected with them.
“Perhaps Renovaré? I probably should read a Dallas Willard book to see if I even like him!”
June 2010
I then said, “I’ll know in the first two chapters whether I connect with it or not.” I have no idea why those words just spewed out of my mouth. Such an odd thing to say.
I came home and previewed Richard Foster’s Celebration of Discipline26 online, and this is what it said in the first chapter of the book:
We must not be led to believe that the disciplines are only for spiritual giants . . . or for those who are contemplatives who devote all their time to prayer and meditation. Far from it. God intends the disciplines of the spiritual life to be for ordinary human beings: people who have jobs, who care for children, who must wash dishes and mow lawns. In fact, the disciplines are best exercised in the midst of our normal daily activities. . . . in our relationships with our husband or wife, our brothers and sisters, our friends and neighbors.27
There have been many occasions when written words have deeply spoken to me. This was one of them. I was in tears one more time.
