During the transition, one of Jay’s dearest high school friends called to hear the details of this opportunity. We weren’t sure where he stood with his faith, but he asked Jay how he could be praying for us. Jay told him that he was most concerned about the financial strain. We were going to have to continue to pay our mortgage until our Greenville house was either leased or sold, and in Chicago we would also have to pay rent that was more than what we paid on our home mortgage. This friend responded to our predicament by saying, “I’ll pay your mortgage until you sell or rent your home.”
When Jay hung up the phone, he shared this astonishing news with me. We were completely blown away. It was another sign that God was confirming this move for us in a tangible way.
In addition to being open to God’s plan for Jay’s work, we had to be open to being humble and accepting the generosity that people offered to us. We had never been in this position before. It was awkward, humbling, and encouraging all at the same time.
