This could not be happening to us again.
The surgical options the doctor presented were not good. The hypoplastic left heart defect would require either a heart transplant shortly after Neale’s birth or a fairly new sequence of surgeries called the Norwood procedure, which would entail three operations before she was eighteen months old. Neale’s left heart defect and surgical options were far worse than what we faced with Brock’s right heart defect. Jay and I were devastated. We agreed that we didn’t know if we had the courage to face one heart surgery, much less three operations. Somehow, we managed to keep going—we didn’t have a lot of other options. It was the beginning of Father’s Day weekend. Would Jay ever be a father again?
