I turned around to cut through the alley to get to my car, but a big black SUV pulled up, blocking my path. I aimed the gun, backing away to where Eugene was. I turned to him and yelled at him to put down the knife or I’d shoot him. He did as he was told, and I got behind him, pushing him forward, shielding me from the men approaching, one of whom was Luciano.
“About time you got here,” grumbled Eugene. “He almost got away.”
“No worries we’ve got him now,” stated Luciano with a strong confident tone.
He stood there with a big 9mm in his hands, held down by his right leg. Two other men stood beside him with similar guns pointed in our direction. I moved up closer to Eugene, putting my gun against his back. He flinched, his body tense. I understood how he felt, for I had only five bullets to work with against guns that likely held fifteen or more rounds.
“Come any closer and I’ll shoot Eugene,” I warned. “Allow me to walk away and we all live another day.”
“What are you carrying?” asked Luciano unconcerned. “A small .38, with six rounds at most. I think you would be crazy to try and take us on. Put down the gun and we can go talk about this.”
“Not a chance,” I answered, trying to keep the nerves out of my voice. “I put it down, I lose my advantage.”
“Fine. Then we will take away your advantage.”
Luciano, with hardly any effort, raised his gun and shot Eugene in the leg, causing him to crumple down, hitting the floor and taking away my shield. I raised my gun with both hands, ready to fire, knowing I had no chance against the three men before me.
“Your mistake was thinking I cared about Eugene; I don’t.”
Luciano stepped forward, aiming for his head. Eugene tried to yell, but the bullet in his skull ended any resistance, blood splattering in all directions. I should have fired but was shocked by what I saw, freezing at the gruesome sight. He walked up and grabbed the gun away from me, never once fearing the fact that I might shoot, knowing it would be suicide for me against the firepower I was facing.
“Now,” he said with all the confidence in the world. “Let’s go for a ride. It’s time we talk about what I’m going to do to you for killing my cousin.”
