Kevin and Janie stood by their boards where the sand almost met the water. They wore wetsuits on which he had placed glowsticks for increased visibility. The pier was well-lit at night too.
Kevin noted that Janie didn’t look timid or apprehensive. Which was a good sign. He still wanted to make sure she knew he wasn’t a stupid daredevil. He was a professional.
“I checked the weather. We will be fine.”
“Good to know.”
“And there are a few surfers about,” he said, pointing to the fellow enthusiasts surfing and glowing in the water. “And I’ll always be nearby.”
“Kevin, I’m fine. Besides, I know how to swim. And scream.” She winked at Kevin.
“OK, then. Let’s roll!”
They walked into the water with their boards, lay on their surfboards and paddled toward the deeper parts on their stomachs. They stood up when they saw the first real wave approaching them. Kevin sneaked a look. Janie seemed to be doing just fine. She wasn’t going to be a pro or a semi in this lifetime, but she knew what she was doing. She had the balance and grace down, and her reaction times were solid.
She looked at him and smiled. “Not dragging you down too much, am I?”
“I’ll survive.” He smiled back at her, and they surfed on.
An hour later, Kevin and Janie came out of the water and lay on the towels they put on the sand with their boards beside them.
“I’ve forgotten how much fun it was,” Janie said, turning to him and balancing herself up with her elbow.
“Hit me up anytime you are in the mood. You are not half-bad.”
Janie smiled. “Wow, that’s high praise.” She lay on her back and closed her eyes for a second. Wow, she was exhausted. One hell of a day.
“Don’t you dare fall asleep on me,” Kevin said, positioning himself on his side and looking at her. “You know I don’t like watching people sleep.”
Janie opened her eyes. “Do you have coffee? Because I need it.”
“Might have something better,” Kevin said and kissed Janie gently on the lips.
Janie looked up at him. “I am going to need more caffeine than that.”
This time the kiss wasn’t short or gentle.
Kevin and Janie entered his apartment kissing. Kevin kicked the door close without letting go. They kept on kissing while tugging at each other’s wetsuit zippers.
Their apartments were planned almost identically, so Janie walked backward instinctively while kissing him, and Kevin obliged. By the time they were in the bedroom, they were both naked. But once they lay down on the bed with Kevin on top, they slowed down. It was time to explore each other, and they had all the time in the world.
