No one should go without insurance in a crisis like this if at all possible. All the different barriers created a mound of medical expenses. The transplant had exceeded $120,000 just for the hospital stay. This didn’t cover treatment expenses, meds, or any basic procedures, not to mention the other . . . I was under a huge financial strain because, at eighteen, China required a special dispensation from the insurance carrier. This is the course parents must typically take when their child reaches eighteen. Still, I had my out-of-pocket expenses to fulfill.
