Wigglesworth giggled. “Just leave it to me. I have a brilliant idea. But first, I must get dressed appropriately to enter the valley.” The Fairy reached into a pocket of his pants and pulled out a tiny mask. Holding it up for them to see, he said, “We never enter the valley without covering ourselves properly.” He positioned the mask over his little angular face. It completely covered his face except for two tiny eye holes. A straight line was painted where his mouth would be but, other than that, it was quite plain. He looked around at each of them. “We Fairies never show our faces. That enables us to keep our thoughts and emotions to ourselves.”
“You hide behind masks?” asked Carling.
“Why is that?” asked Higson.
“Our faces are windows to our minds and hearts. Obviously, we don’t want others to know what we are thinking or feeling. We like to keep our real selves hidden. Faces show way too much, don’t you think?”
