“The Sand Pounder is one of those rare historical novels with a charm that appeals to both young and old readers.” Vincent Dublado for Readers’ Favorite
“M.J. Evans does an excellent job of winding the era's history and the lesser-known job of the Sand Pounders into a realistic story of a mature teen's determination to make a difference in her world.” Diane Donovan for Midwest Book Review:
“A gripping YA historical novel packed full of twists, turns and memorable characters. Highly recommended!” The Wishing Shelf Book Review(UK)
Fearing an invasion by German and Japanese forces during World War II, the U.S. Coast Guard enlisted horsemen to patrol the beaches along the east and west coasts. The unit was called "The Sand Pounders" and they rode their horses up and down the beaches from 1942 to 1944.
In Tillamook, Oregon, a young equestrian decided to join them. There was only one problem...they were only accepting men. That didn't slow her down.
"The Sand Pounder" is a Young Adult historical fiction set during World War II.
I am a wife, a mom and a grandmother. I am also a competitive equestrian and award-winning author. I especially love to write about horses, both real or fantasy. In 2016, I released, "In the Heart of a Mustang." This story is not a fantasy but it is all about horses. This coming of age young adult novel has won the 2016 Gold Medal from the Literary Classics Awards in Young Adult General Fiction and the Silver Medal in the Nautilus Awards as well as the Silver Medal from Readers Favorite Awards.
My current project is a four-part series titled “The Centaur Chronicles”. I am excited about this new middle-grade fantasy. The first book, “The Stone of Mercy,” was released on Oct. 1, 2016. It has already garnered several awards including the Gold Medal from the Feathered Quill awards. The second, “The Stone of Courage,” was released on April 15, 2017 and has won a Book Excellence Award.

Many books and movies tell the tale of World War II as it played out in Europe. Only a few, "The Sand Pounder" included, record what life was like for the families back home in the U.S. This book tells the story of a young woman who wants to join the Coast Guard as a Sand Pounder. Their job was to patrol the beaches along our coasts. But they are only taking men. Did that stop her? Read this historical fiction to find out.

The Sand Pounder
The cold rain on the Oregon Coast reflected not only Jane’s mood but seemingly everyone’s mood in the community. Jane noticed it right away when she returned to Tillamook High School in the new year. As she walked past the Tillamook Cheesemaker’s logo at the entrance to the school, there were no groups of students huddled together talking and laughing, excited to be together again after the long Christmas holiday. Instead, students and teachers alike walked down the halls, shoulders slumped, eyes downcast. Noticeable was the large number of junior and senior boys who were missing. Those already eighteen, and the ones who could get away with saying they were eighteen even if they weren’t, had enlisted as Luke had. By the end of 1942, 3.9 million Americans would enlist in the armed services, and by the end of 1943 that number would sell to 9.1 million.
