We were fine until we reached mid-stream. At that point, I felt my heavy, lopsided pack slip further to one side. I stopped moving and braced my legs as well as I could, but the top-heavy pack kept rolling to the side. Before I could figure out a way to stop it, the pack pulled me over. I went completely under water. I kicked my legs but, as hard as I tried, I could not get back up. The pack was just too heavy for me.
I soon found myself completely under water. I couldn’t breathe. I must admit, I panicked. I kicked my legs even harder and tossed my head, trying to get my head above water so I could get air into my burning lungs. Nothing worked, yet I kept trying. I had to. I knew if I didn’t, I would lose my life. I felt my heart pounding.
