The trails can get not only tiring but boring as well. Fortunately, we had Fat along and Fat loved to sing. He sang both long and loud. He loved the songs titled, “Seein’ Nellie Home,” and “It Rained All Night the Day I Left.”
The song Fat sang most often went like this:
“There is a boarding house,
Three miles away,
Where they have ham ‘n eggs,
Three times a day;
Oh, how them boarders yell,
When they hear that dinner bell,
Oh, how them onions smell,
Three times a day.”
I heard it so many times, I have it memorized. I bounced my head in rhythm as he sang.
Fat had a way of keeping everyone laughing. Laughter is an odd sound that men make when they are happy. Horses don’t do that.
