We reached the snow shortly after leaving Fish Lake. The men dismounted and started leading us. I was third in line, behind Lad and Blaze. Dick and Bill brought up the rear. At first, we were fine as we stepped on the crusty surface of the snow. But, before long, we were in trouble. Every fifty feet or so, one of the horses broke through the top crust of ice that covered the surface of the snow and became stuck in the snow underneath that was at least eight feet deep.
“Blaze is down,” Jay said. He started pulling on Blaze’s lead rope. I watched as Blaze tried to get his front legs on top of the snow, but they just kept breaking through the crust and sinking back down. Nothing the horse attempted succeeded in getting him up.
