We had long ago stopped getting letters of introduction to present to the governors. The men had to do some fast talking to even get to take a picture with the occasional governor who would consent to meet with us. It seemed these men were always busy doing very important things, or gone from their offices to campaign to get re-elected. Few consented to meet with us.
We did get to meet with Governor McCleary in Kentucky. Now that was an event I will never forget. It started out in a typical fashion with George introducing us.
“Governor McCleary,” George said after dismounting and taking the man’s outstretched hand, “now this is a real pleasure. We’re the Overland Westerners from Washington State. We are going on the longest horseback ride in history. We’re visiting all the state capitals in the Union plus Washington D.C. You’re our thirty-third stop.”
