Finally Ladybug spotted people in a village along the riverbank. There were brightly painted homes, farms and beehives, a school and market. But something was very wrong.
The garden plots were plowed but nothing was growing in them. There were no bees buzzing around the hives. Adults were rushing to pack baskets and trunks. They were stacking all their belongings on horse drawn carts. The horses looked underfed.
The children were hoisting backpacks on to each other's shoulders.
Ladybug saw a teenage girl crying over a locked trunk. She landed on the girl's shoulder. "I wonder what's in that trunk!" she said.
The girl was so surprised that she stopped crying.
Ladybug was surprised too, that the girl had noticed her. It was the first time a person ever had.
