Sensory acuity is using all our senses to observe the world around us in order to gather detailed information about the present moment. This is especially important for communication because there are other factors that contribute more to understanding someone than just their words. In fact, words make up only about 7% of communication.
Mastering sensory acuity requires using your other keen senses to expand how you see, perceive, understand, and communicate with others. Things like tonality, where their eyes are looking, what color their face is (i.e. blushing), the shape of their mouth, and how they are standing or sitting are all indicators of the way someone feels that is not communicated through their words.
Developing this skill requires you to focus entirely on the person with whom you are communicating with. Mastering this not only allows you to read people at a higher level, but to also understand and relate to them in a deeper manner.

Ignite Culture
Master sensory acuity. This concept came out of a psychological approach developed in the 1970s at the University of California, Santa Cruz, called neuro-linguistic programming (NLP). It involves analyzing and applying strategies used by successful individuals to reach personal goals. NLP relates to thoughts, language, and patterns of behavior and seeks to build effective communication between conscious and unconscious mental processes to help people increase their creativity and problem-solving skills. As part of NLP, sensory acuity is about learning to use all our senses to observe the world closely and carefully in order to gather detailed information about the present moment. Sensory acuity is also important for human interactions because people’s body language is always sharing important clues about our emotions and thoughts. In fact, words make up only 7 percent of human communication, while tonality makes up 38 percent, and physiology (think body language) accounts for 55 percent. Those who master sensory acuity learn to observe other people’s physiology, which is a precursor to empathy. Imagine you’re talking to someone on your executive team about a challenge. How might your reaction and behavior change if you could fully tune in to that person’s smallest changes in skin color, muscle tone, eye contact, and breathing? Sensory acuity is about reading the person in front of you and reading the room around you. It’s a powerful skill that can only be learned by those who know how to be fully present in the moment.
