Childlike wonder is being completely immersed in the world around you. It’s about coming from an open/neutral perspective, getting curious, asking questions, and being aware of when you are judging and evaluating.
Many people become entrenched in their perspectives, beliefs, preferences, points of view, etc. as they grow up. To be fully present with others, you have to let go of your inherent or historical biases. Otherwise, It’s as if you are viewing the world with orange tinted glasses. Everything you experience is tinted orange because that’s how you see and perceive. In this mindset, you won’t be able to accept new and different ideas, or engage with others you speak to.
When it comes to childlike wonder, it’s about setting aside all biases, agendas, perceptions, and beliefs about how things are going to go and being curious so you can truly connect and interact with others as an “empty vessel”. When you are empty of perceptions, preferences, judgements, biases and beliefs, you are truly able to meet people where they are and enable them to not only feel like they are contributing, but to actually contribute.

Ignite Culture
Embrace childlike wonder. As very young children, we are completely immersed in the world around us. We are constantly observing, interacting, and learning. Our senses are fully engaged. We have endless curiosity. We might become fascinated with a worm or a butterfly or a dandelion. We ask a lot of questions. Why does the sun come up in the morning? How do people get taller? What’s bigger than an elephant? Why does my brother have blue eyes when mine are brown? We question everything because we exist in a constant state of exploration. We try . . . we stumble . . . we learn . . . we grow . . . we try again . . . we stumble . . . we learn . . . we keep growing. No judgement. No regret. That’s just the day-to-day life of the average toddler. Youngsters are never bored because the world is full of wonder and opportunities to explore. But, somewhere along the way, this changes. As we age, we become less observant, more disengaged, and more set in our ways. We get so used to our daily routines and surroundings that we stop noticing them. Our sense of childlike wonder goes into hibernation. We may be more mature, but we’re less fully alive. Through intentional work, this slide into going through the motions can be reversed, and that childlike spirit of wonder can be reawakened. There’s nothing childish about childlike wonder. It’s an energy source worth your attention as a leader.
