She barely recovered from Brad when Scott dropped in. As he approached, she noticed his demeanor somehow looked calmer. He usually looked uptight with a blank look on his face or a scowl. His pace toward her was slow and deliberate and his face was calm. Wendy didn’t move but let him come to her. “Hi.” “Hi, Scott. What brings you here?” “I just wanted to see you and know how your business is doing. Looks busy.” “Business is good.” Scott stared at her attire, looked at her up and down and back to her face. “You look sensational.” Wendy controlled her shock at his compliment and for a second didn’t know what to say, “Thanks,” popped out. She wore wide legged pants and a pink and white striped shirt. She clenched her hands together, “Time for a change. Glad you like it.” “How could I not, very sexy.” Wendy was overcome and proud. She never expected him to use the word sexy on her, he never had before except when they dated and the early part of their marriage. “Thanks.” She wondered if what he said was just an act? He looked around. By coming to the nursery, he showed a renewed interest in her…but she didn’t understand why. “This place really shows the beauty of nature and great taste in the design.” His compliments sounded real, although so many at once worried her. “I did some advertising and it proved profitable.”

“I’m glad for you. Listen, it’s lunch time, can I treat you?”

Wendy was taken aback, but she decided what the hell. “Okay, but I have to be back in an hour, so it’ll have to be fast food.” “That’s fine.” Wendy let Carol know she would be gone for a while and followed Scott to his car. As she scooted into it, she became aware she no longer felt anger toward him, but still felt resentment and confusion. She appreciated his attempts to show a consideration for her, something rare in the time leading up to the separation. Now, she wanted to hear his story about what he’d been up to. She wondered, if he could possibly have changed.
