Carol was with a customer when Wendy arrived at the nursery, so she headed for the office and checked her week’s schedule.
Carol came to see Wendy after she finished with the customer.
“What’s up, Carol?”
“Things are good, but…”
“Uh, oh, something about ‘buts’. . .”
“I need a stronger person to help here. I’m sorry, but can you consider hiring a man, or a stronger woman than us. They could carry large plants to peoples’ cars and move some of the bigger boxes.”
“I’m sorry. I should have thought of this at the beginning. With all you and Brenda do, I didn’t realize how much a man could make things easier for everyone. Of course, I’ll put an ad in the paper.”
“Great, thanks.”
“You’re the one who has been great. I’m lucky to have you. Until I hire a man I’ll try to be here more often.”
“Perfect.”
Saturday morning a journalist from the Los Angeles Sun newspaper came to the nursery. He wanted to interview Wendy for a write up in the paper. Excitement filled Wendy’s face…she was so proud they chose her place. They talked while Wendy walked with the reporter, Bill Taylor. She received first rate compliments. She gave him the history of the nursery, her thoughts about the place, and about the atmosphere where people liked to linger on a bench or in the gazebo. The article would appear the following Friday.
In the evening Wendy and Elliott went to see The Way We Were, starring Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford. The movie came out the end of December to rave reviews and many customers mentioned how great they liked it. They hadn’t had time to go see it, but they found an art movie house still running the movie on the weekends.
“What a fabulous movie,” Wendy said as they left the theatre.”
“A wonderful surprise…great acting.”
“For sure, although the ending wasn’t what I was hoping for.”
Elliott put his arm around her shoulder as they walked to his car.
“Want something to drink?” Wendy asked as soon as they came into her house.
“How about some coffee?”
“Coming right up.” Wendy started the coffeemaker and went back to Elliott where they cuddled. They talked, drank the coffee and finally retreated to the bedroom.
