She turned on the TV and watched the sitcom, Bewitched, it always made her laugh. After a while she switched to the news. She was stunned when the sport’s commentator announced Billie Jean King beat Bobby Riggs in straight sets. What a great tennis win for women since a woman never beat a man at the high level of competition they just played. Women started to follow their dreams, many of which were crushed by the male dominated society.
As the announcer finished the news the phone rang. As soon as she picked up, she heard Scott. “Hi, I hope you don’t mind my calling.”
“No, but I am surprised. Why are you calling?”
“Just wanted to see how things were.”
“They’re fine. And how’s the new job?” She didn’t know why she started a conversation, but she did.
“Good. Thanks for asking.”
“Glad to hear that.”
“Well, I just wanted to say hello. I’ll let you go.”
“Okay, thanks.”
They hung up and Wendy didn’t know what to think. An unsettling call, like he wanted to say something and didn’t know how or couldn’t. She still hadn’t done anything about the divorce. Her mind concentrated on her nursery.
She headed for the kitchen when Jake called. He told her the price the owner quoted for the Malibu property. It sounded reasonable for the location. Wendy talked to her accountant who assured her it was a good investment, and she had the means to join with her uncle.
Wendy agreed to the partnership. She called Cindy to let her know and Cindy shouted with excitement, “Fantastic!”
Wendy admitted she was nervous but pleased the bartender remained someone who already knew the ropes. Another new challenge awaited her, but she was glad she didn’t have to be involved in much except for the re-decorating of the diner…something she looked forward to. Since Jake admired Wendy’s taste at her nursery, he wanted her to do something special with the diner, plus find a new name for it. The Beach House needed to change to something different. Everything around Malibu was beach themed. She went outside and walked around in her back garden, a few minutes later a theme came to her. She’d decorate it like a mountain cabin. Since there was a fireplace, she decided on the name Fireplace Grill. She called Jake, also enthusiastic about the plan and the name.
