“What’s the buzz?” Cindy asked.
“I tried to call but couldn’t reach you. I wanted to tell you about a diner my cousin Jake wants to buy in Malibu, and he wants me to partner with him. It’s so cool looking and even has a wood burning fireplace. Can you imagine how it will look on a cold, winter day, with a fire burning? I’m really jazzed.”
“I can tell. You’re going in half with him?”
“Yes, but he’ll handle the business end. I’m going to be a partner in absentia, but I’ll still have input.”
“How ‘bout entertainment?”
“Probably not, it’s just a gathering place offering drinks, snacks, chicken wings, cocktail hotdogs and a few other assorted items.”
“Sounds primo, can’t wait to see it. I’m excited for you. How are you and Mike?”
“We’re cool. He’s fun. I’m going to see if he can come by my place tomorrow before work.”
“Hope he can.”
“Me too. I’m going to see him now and then leave. I’m exhausted.”
“Gotcha.”
“As Wendy reached Mike, he spoke first. “Hey, Wendy, what’s the word?”
Standing next to the bar she leaned into him. “I wondered if you’d want to come over before you start tomorrow?”
“Sure. I start at five. I could come around three thirty.”
“That’d be cool. Gotta go, see you then,” and she left.
The following morning, Wendy stopped to pick up the picture she took of Brad. He looked amazing. She’d frame it and placed it in her office for a constant reminder of someone special in her life.
She entered the nursery feeling light-hearted and ready for a great day. This September day turned out cooler than yesterday and the day before. The customers were in an enthusiastic mood, no doubt thrilled by the temperature drop. It had gone from ninety-eight degrees two days earlier to eighty degrees. She chatted with some customers. She liked when they shared about their gardens.
Carol came in at one. Wendy picked up her stuff in the office and looked forward to a captivating afternoon.
