Whenever someone puts two disparate ideas or things together, they are using their imagination and developing something new or different. It may not always be original—ideas are always building on and borrowing from others—but the result is new for that moment, that situation, that person, and that question. As Austin Kleon says in the book Steal Like an Artist, “Every new idea is just a mashup or a remix of one or more previous ideas” (Kleon 2012, 9). Creativity lies in the space where that mash-up occurs.
By accepting this definition of creativity, you will discover the creativity within you. It’s a matter of perspective. Are there ways you are being creative in your job or in your life? Are there ways you can make your work and responsibilities more fun, simply by shifting your approach? When you begin to see new possibilities in daily routines or approaches, you will then realize we all have something I call creative power.
