In the spring of 2009, someone gave me the book Nearer to Jesus by Sarah Young. It had been very special to the person who gave it to me, and she wanted to share it in expectation that it would also be a blessing to me. I began to read the reflections, which seemed to come from Young’s lectio divina or divine reading of the Scriptures. She was finding in her reading that she could speak to God about what was challenging her, and then she was listening and hearing God speak to her with some amazing and loving answers.
I read these reflections with a growing awe that God would talk to anyone in that manner, but after some months, I also began to notice a strong feeling of envy. Why did God talk to HER like this but not to ME!?! After all, doesn’t God love us all the same? So, why is Sarah Young special?
Finally, I got around to asking God about this. I said, “Why don’t You talk to me the way You talk to Sarah?”
His very simple reply in my mind was, “Why don’t you listen?”
