Then one day in 1998, my mom called to tell me that Carolyn’s husband had left her after telling her he did want to be religious anymore. He took her off his insurance policy that he had through his employer which left her with no viable option for health insurance. She was self-employed with her cleaning business and going to college to obtain her degree to become an English teacher. To make matters worse, she had found a lump in her breast.
