Margaux was Lisa’s confidante. Lisa constantly questioned Margaux about her papa’s visitors to learn when they were expected. As a result, she had the opportunity to scramble to her favorite hiding spot before the visitors arrived.
In the meetings, Lisa heard a lot of words she did not understand. She would later ask Margaux to explain their meaning to her.
Within her concealed tapestry place, the thing she loved the most about his meetings and her secured eavesdropping was her new skill. By hearing their voices and the way they moved into the solar, she could sense their sincerity and whether they were telling the truth.
Lisa knew—mostly from the titles her papa used when he addressed his visitors—that there were some especially important people who came to seek his counsel. He met with dukes, leaders of the church, moneylenders, merchants, and peasants. Lisa wanted to do what her papa did, but she was a girl ... and managing businesses were something girls did not do.
Lisa was learning to “see” with her ears and trust her perceptions. She memorized voices, intonations, laughs, sighs, and themes of the conversations. That knowledge she could then attach to the title and name of any visitor when she encountered him.
Lisa had a feeling that one day all the information she was gathering would prove valuable.
