Emma, knowing little of the lives of those outside the castle, began listening intently to the conversations around the fireplace. Nichol nudged her and whispered, “They want to hear from you. Say something that pleases them.”
Just then, the owner brought them more food and ale. Emma pulled off a piece of bread and told the owner to get food and ale to share with all seated around the fire with them.
Emma looked at the patrons. Seated close by was a young man clad in tattered clothes.
“What work do you do in Rouen?”
“Lady Emma, I am a baker, and I made the bread we are eating. Thank you for the ale. I must return to my duties. I have loaves to take to your castle.” He stood, bowed, and left.
