Don’t Sign Any Contracts Until You Understand What You May Be Signing Away witha Traditional Publisher
Authors who sign publishing related contracts for a contract to create/produce/sell their book through a traditional publisher should not jump in until they really understand the water. That means every clause; every paragraph. No exceptions.
TIP: If you don’t “get” what it says, engage an attorney who specializes in intellectual property. Too many authors let their egos rule … as in “I have a publishing contract … a publisher wants my book” … and they are clueless as to what they are getting into. For one, the publishing contract most likely isn’t a contract that has the author’s best interests.
It’s designed for the publisher. And for that matter, the publisher may not be a true publisher. It could be a “pay to publish” operation … meaning you pay for every service along the way. The risk is totally in your corner. It is well worth the expense.
