“Math was my best subject,” Petey said. “Maybe I can help you figure out the problem. What kind of questions does he ask?
“All the questions are stories about how fast people run and how long it takes for trains to get places. I guess the formulas are supposed to help, but I can’t ever figure out, which ones to use.”
“Frannie,” her father said, “that’s just a matter of common sense. The stories provide the variables and you solve for the missing information. If you can identify the variables in a story, the formula you need is obvious.”
“I guess,” Frannie murmured. “It just didn’t seem that obvious to me.”
“Try to think about why you’ve learned something,” her father suggested. “Ask yourself what you might be able to do with new information. That’s adult learning.”
