John and Katie sat hand in hand on a ragged quilt that had been in the Grayfox’s family for as long as Katie could remember. Its faded images depicted the Trail of Tears her tribal ancestors traveled when they were forced to resettle during the 1830s.
Mr. Grayfox recited the story of their family name. In a solemn voice he began, “My great, great grandfather lived in a time of starvation and struggle as a young man. As our People trudged toward their new homeland, he would go missing, sometimes for days at a time. He was not one to go out with the hunting parties, preferring the night and solitude instead.
