“When I say I love you, it means that you’re the most important man in my life. It means that I trust you and that you’re my best friend. When you say I love you it means that you’re ready to act like we’re married.” When John said nothing, Katie continued, “and when I tell you that a man is my friend and nothing more, I need for you to believe me.”
“About Douglas,” John said, “It’s not that I don’t believe you. I do. I can’t help that I’m jealous of the time he spends with you. I want to be the one who brightens your stressful days. And you’re right about my being ready to get married. I’d love to have you by my side all day, every day, but I can wait. Just please don’t grow into someone who doesn’t want to marry me.”
