“Yes, Ma’am,” Jessie muttered.
“Katie, we’ll do yours first. Jessie, watch carefully as I position Katie for the best view.” Mrs. Ramblin explained the criteria for optimal positioning, reviewed the instructions they would give the patient, and showed them where to stand to protect themselves from the radiation when taking the X-ray.
Listening to Mrs. Ramblin calmed Katie’s jitters. She silently reviewed Mrs. Ramblin’s instructions while she got Jessie ready for her X-ray. She pushed the button to take the image, then let out a long sigh of relief.
The cramped darkroom had a distinctly chemical smell. With the door open and the light on, Mrs. Ramblin talked the girls through the development process using a spent film to demonstrate the timing for immersing the film in each of three tanks. “Can you remember the steps?” she asked.
