Synopsis

Leslie, the overachiever of the four Nurseketeers, is passionate about working in the operating room. Struggling with setting priorities and the inability to say no, Leslie can’t keep up with her studies, meet the expectations of her basketball coach, serve effectively as president of the Student Nurses’ Association, work part time, and remain fully engaged with the love of her life. Her dream of becoming a nurse is challenged when she fails the first exam of her senior year. Compounding her frustration, she and her mother are arguing. The relationship with her boyfriend is heading for the rocks and her world is crumbling as her challenges loom like mountains to climb, the summit hidden by clouds of frustration, failure, and despair.

Author Biography

Joy Don Baker & Terri Goodman, nursing students in the ‘70s like the fictional characters in their Nurseketeers series, are both writers in professional nursing literature. They met in the ‘80s and have remained friends for years. As co-authors, their mission is to share enjoyment, writing, and learning through meaningful stories about diverse nursing characters. Both are well-established leaders in perioperative nursing. Dr. Baker teaches at the University of Texas at Arlington and served as the editor-in-chief of AORN Journal. Dr. Goodman is an entrepreneur and an approved provider of continuing education as the principal at Terri Goodman & Associates. Baker & Goodman have produced the award-winning book A, B, & Cs of Author Partnering, the definitive how-to guide that leads readers through creating a partnership, establishing a productive work environment, and producing a work of fiction, non-fiction, or journal article.

Implementing New Skills

Developing new test-taking habits is rarely easy. Over the years, we build deeply ingrained cognitive pathways—reflexive ways of reading, analyzing, and answering questions. Something new, no matter how superior, initially feels clumsy, slow, and unnatural. Trying to replace these established patterns with a new strategy make us uncomfortable rather than enthusiastic. Choosing a new, unfamiliar approach requires constant effort, intentionally overriding our baseline instincts. Every question becomes a battle between the path of least resistance and the discipline required to execute a better technique. However, it is exactly this process that helps to transition from the effortless repetition of old habits to forging new skills. While a fresh strategy feels riskier and more exhausting in the moment, only persistence will overcome inertia, expand intellectual flexibility, and ultimately achieve the desired results.

Mountains to Climb

“Suck it up, Leslie, you’ve got this!” Leslie said aloud as the Nurseketeers approached their classroom on Monday.

“That’s telling yourself.” Robin laughed.

The four girls settled into seats and took a collective deep breath. Robin gave Leslie an encouraging grin.

Dr. Langston distributed the Research test. Leslie hesitated, then covered the answers before reading the first question. She closed her eyes. Soon she nodded, opened her eyes, and smiled when she decided upon the answer. She circled “b” with a satisfied grin and moved on to the next question. When she uncovered the answers to the fifth question, she frowned and reread the choices. Still frowning, she shook her head and reread the question. Leslie shook her head, put a dot by question five and moved on to question six.

Leslie had only one question left when she heard, “Five minutes, Folks. You have five more minutes.” She marked a response, then returned to the dotted questions and answered them as quickly as she could.
