“My dad died before I turned three and my mom had to work. She has two spinster cousins, Lulu and Elva, who own Luva’s, a restaurant in our neighborhood, and I grew up there. Once I could carry a glass of water without spilling it, I helped out. We practically lived there. Mom and I were either at Luva’s or at church. We didn’t do much more than sleep at home. Mom used to tease me and say that she couldn’t be sure I did all the right things unless she kept me where she could see me. I loved being wherever she was.”
“That’s kinda cool,” Robin said. “Your mother sounds like my grandmother. I lived with Gram from when I was eight, and except for my last two years of high school when I was practicing being a perfect shit, I spent all my time with her.
