The professor picked me to captain one of the debate teams, and the guy who didn’t get picked told his buddies, in a whisper loud enough to hear in Chicago, that no black broad who got here on a gimme grant should get picked over a white guy who’s paying his way. You coulda heard a pin drop.”
“No way!” Leslie said. “I can’t believe someone would say that out loud, even if he believed it. Did the class crucify him?”
