“Mom, this is Robin. Don’t hang up. Gram and I are waiting for you at the grocery store on the corner. Please come meet us. We have a little time to visit and you can be back in plenty of time in case Harold comes home for lunch. Please come.”
“Robin? Is that really you?” Aileen was hesitant, her voice a mere whisper.
“Yes, Mom, it’s me. Please hurry so we’ll have time to visit before you have to get back home.”
“Robin. I’m not sure…”
“Don’t say no. We’re just a block away and you have to come. Say you’ll come.”
“Well…”
“Mom, say you’ll come.” Robin’s voice was insistent. “We’re right here and there’s not a lot of time.”
“Well… Okay… but I won’t be able to stay long. Harold may come home.”
“I know, Mom. Come quickly so you can get back in plenty of time. Come now.”
“But…”
“Now. Right now. You’re wasting time. I want to see you.” Robin hung the receiver on the cradle, and her dime clinked as it dropped somewhere inside the black payphone.
