Author Biography

Joy Don Baker & Terri Goodman, nursing students in the ‘70s like the fictional characters in their Nurseketeers series, are both writers in professional nursing literature. They met in the ‘80s and have remained friends for years. As co-authors, their mission is to share enjoyment, writing, and learning through meaningful stories about diverse nursing characters. Both are well-established leaders in perioperative nursing. Dr. Baker teaches at the University of Texas at Arlington and served as the editor-in-chief of AORN Journal. Dr. Goodman is an entrepreneur and an approved provider of continuing education as the principal at Terri Goodman & Associates. Baker & Goodman have produced the award-winning book A, B, & Cs of Author Partnering, the definitive how-to guide that leads readers through creating a partnership, establishing a productive work environment, and producing a work of fiction, non-fiction, or journal article.

Conflict is viewed as a barrier to productivity, a fire to be extinguished before work can resume. However, by collaborating instead of compromising, conflict can be transformed from destructive to innovative. Collaborative management moves conflict from "me versus you" to "us versus the problem." The most robust conflict resolution strategy is collaboration, a purposeful activity that requires the greatest investment of time and effort of all of the approaches. 100, 101 Collaboration is appropriate when the partners perceive that the conflict can have a significant effect on the future of the partnership. Strong leaders tend toward fixing problems through constructive confrontation and crucial conversations 102 focused on identifying the source of the problem and seeking a creative resolution. 103 Collaboration involves considering the partners’ various points of view objectively, then weighing them against facts, emotions, reservations, and doubts.

Collaboration is an exploration strategy with the goal of considering all options in crafting the resolution that best supports the partnership objectives. Use of collaboration strategies creates a problem-solving environment where the partners evaluate alternatives and consider the facts. Through collaboration and productive dialogue, partners can produce a more creative and robust resolution than any of the original alternatives. 104 Collaboration can be successful only when those involved aligned on the partnership’s core values are fully assertive and cooperative, and are willing to explore alternatives without bias.
