“You’re joking, right,” was the response from one of the pilots.
“Negative, Liberty flight, it’s no joke. We show all your aircraft sustained at least two hits. Please vector 090 and proceed to Check Point Sierra.”
“Liberty One, to Deltastar, there must be some mistake.”
“Deltastar to Liberty flight, this is not up for debate. Your squadron is out of service. Follow directions immediately and respond to Check Point Sierra.”
“Roger Deltastar,” the voice sounded irritated, “turning 090.”
“Deltastar to Hatchet flight,” the officer continued as he watched the blips on the radar screen that represented the Hornets change direction, “Hatchet Four, Hatchet Six, and Bulldog Three are the only aircraft in your flight left intact. All other aircraft should follow Liberty flight to Check Point Sierra.”
“Copy that Deltastar,” said one of the pilots from the flight of helicopters without argument.
The officer on the AWACS looked down at the radar operator smiling. The airman smiled back, “Do you think the battle group is in trouble, Sir?”
“Son,” chuckled the officer, “you can bully your way around a lot of things, but not a well-planned trap. Someone down there knows how this admiral thinks and is going to use it against him. Let’s watch and see what happens.”
