His pace quickened, and his anxiety rose. He noticed the ground fog in the forest thicken, making it look more eerie than earlier. That only increased his nervousness. He typed a quick text message on his cell phone while he moved. He hit send, taking a quick look around to get his bearings. The forest seemed to be getting thicker, if that was possible. He thought he saw movement behind every tree and bush. He looked back down at the phone in anticipation of an answer, but there was none.
Something suddenly hit his legs, knocking them out from under him. He managed to hang onto the phone when he hit the ground hard, knocking the breath out of him. His lungs hurt, and he struggled to breathe. He’d landed face-first and was lying prone. With a jolt, he realized he was missing his rifle. The fog closed in around him, disrupting his focus and spiking his anxiety levels. He looked at his phone again—no response.
